5 Essential Oils for Wellbeing

I take my own wellbeing seriously and am responsible for my own health care. One of the tools in my arsenal is essential oils. The natural oils found in plants have been used for centuries to help support our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellness. Here are five that I value highly and always keep on hand:

1. Frankincense.

As the king of oils, Frankincense is known to support healthy cellular function. When inhaled or diffused, Frankincense promotes feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness.

Prized for centuries for its health benefits, frankincense immediately affects the body upon application or inhalation. It helps boost our immune system thus preventing illness. Frankincense has a rejuvenating effect on the skin due to its powerful astringent properties. It can be used to help reduce acne blemishes, prevent wrinkles, and to lift and tighten skin to naturally slow signs of aging. Frankincense can help with wound healing and reduce the appearance of stretch marks, and eczema.

Frankincense helps decrease inflammation and pain, making it a natural treatment option for pain-related conditions that affect the muscles, joints, and tendons. It balances hormone levels and can help relieve pain, cramps, constipation, headaches, anxiety, nausea, fatigue and mood swings. In addition, its antimicrobial effects against a variety of hair, nail, and skin issues make it a must-have in your medicine arsenal.

I recommend applying it to the bottoms of your feet for immune support or directly to areas of inflammation or pain. For a direct application, mix two to three drops of oil with a carrier oil and apply.

2. Lavender.

Lavender essential oil is the most used essential oil in the world today! Because of its powerful antioxidant, antimicrobial, sedative, calming and antidepressive properties, lavender oil has been used both cosmetically and therapeutically for centuries.

Lavender essential oil provides antioxidant protection and works to prevent and reverse disease. Free radicals, like toxins, chemicals, and pollutants, are arguably the most dangerous and common risk factor contributing to disease. Antioxidants play an important role in neutralizing free radicals.

The aroma of lavender eases tension and soothes frayed emotions, while its intense impact on the nervous system makes it an oil to try for many needs. It can be helpful in treating migraines, headaches, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness while also increasing mental activity.

In times of anxiety, both inhalation and simultaneous application to pulse points immediately soothe mind and body. For sleep support, diffusing lavender throughout the night in addition to applying it to the bottoms of feet and ankles before bed will help to ease you into a restful and sustaining slumber. It can also be utilized as a spot treatment for skin irritations or added to skin care products to soothe and rejuvenate.

3. Peppermint.

Peppermint essential oil revives your spirit and rejuvenates the atmosphere to give you a feeling of freshness. It is a natural energizer that can “perk” your mental and/or physical energy when you need it. Peppermint essential oil is suitable for an abundance of oral and topical uses and antimicrobial properties, making it a very versatile oil.

Peppermint essential oil is a very effective natural painkiller and muscle relaxant. It is especially helpful in soothing an aching back, sore muscles, and melting away a tension headache.  Its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties are part of the reason why it is so successful at relieving pain, even reducing migraine pain.

Its menthol content opens airways, helps to clear the respiratory tract and so improves respiratory function. Inhaling diffused peppermint oil can quickly unclog sinuses and offer relief for scratchy throats. Peppermint acts as an expectorant and may provide relief for colds, cough, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis.

There are so many uses it’s difficult to list them all here. From reducing a fever to natural bug repellant, peppermint essential oil has a myriad of applications. It is definitely a wise addition to your medical arsenal.

4. Orange.

My first introduction to essential oils was the intoxicating smell of orange. Ever since I have been a fan of the aromatherapeutic power of essential oils. The instant uplift of emotions that I felt was addictive, and this oil became and still is my favorite!

Throughout history, orange oil has been used to treat widespread conditions, including poor digestion, chronic fatigue, depression, oral and skin infections, colds, flu, and low libido. It’s considered an effective antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, deodorant, digestive stimulant and circulation-booster!

Orange essential oil is an immune system enhancer due to Limonene, which is a monocyclic monoterpene that’s present in orange peel oil and is a powerful defender against oxidative stress. Monoterpenes are capable of stimulating the mind and body. They can also help to reduce stress and anxiety while improving your mood for a more positive outlook.

Its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties along with its fresh sweet citrus smell, make it a great way to clean countertops, cutting boards or appliances without harsh chemicals. Add a few drops to a spray bottle along with other cleansing oils like lemon essential oil. I love to diffuse it,  not only to cleanse the air in my home and office but also for immune and metabolism support.

5. No. 1 Protective Blend.

No. 1 Protective Blend is the perfect blend to guard your overall health, its aromatic fragrance keeps me smiling and feeling great. This unique formula includes clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary and spikenard offering a distinctive, spicy aroma.

Spikenard is an oil which has been used for thousands of years to promote a peaceful and calm mind. In Ayurveda, the roots of spikenard have been utilized for many health benefits.  Its properties include antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, deodorizing, calming, and skin conditioning.

No. 1 Protective Blend is perfect for home cleaning as it leaves a distinctive clean fragrance. Freshen your home by diffusing alone or with a few drops of any citrus oil to help clear the air and achieve an energizing, uplifting, and purifying atmosphere. I love diffusing this spicy oil anytime, but especially at Christmas, the heady aroma of citrus, cloves, and cinnamon invokes the essence and spirit of Christmas.

Don’t underestimate the power of these amazing botanicals to boost your immune system and improve your overall wellbeing. Help is just a click away
